egawati Soekarnoputri, the chairwoman of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), voted at a polling station near her residence in Kebagusan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday, along with her two children, Coordinating Human Development and Culture Minister Puan Maharani and Prananda Prabowo.

Other members of her family, such as her daughter-in-law and grandchildren, also voted there.

"I am optimistic," Megawati told the press when asked if Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama and his running mate Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat would secure re-election.

“If Jakarta's voters are rational and objective in selecting their leaders, we know [Ahok-Djarot will win],” she said.

Before going into the polling booth, Megawati took some time to look at the murals painted on the walls of the polling site. The murals displayed pictures of the symbol of Pancasila, the state ideology, and her father, former president Sukarno.

She was economical in responding to queries related to the Jakarta election, emphasizing her optimism that Ahok and Djarot would govern the capital city for another five years.

She refused to comment on recent political developments, including the spat between former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar, who is said to have joined the PDI-P.

Megawati is expected to gather together with party elites, including Djarot, at her residence to watch the quick count of today's election. Ahok will join the gathering later on. (evi)
