ndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri has called for more support for incumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and and his running mate Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat when they face candidate pair Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno in the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Megawati expressed her gratitude for those who voted for Ahok and Djarot in the first round. Ahok-Djarot finished in first place on Wednesday.

Megawati also encouraged other Jakartans to give their votes to Ahok and Djarot in the second round and allow the pair to finish their work in the capital city.

“We really hope you will consider [supporting Ahok-Djarot] so that they can continue their work,” said Megawati during a press conference at her private residence in Kebagusan, South Jakarta, on Wednesday evening. Ahok and Djarot were also present.

A quick count by Kompas showed the incumbents securing 42.87 percent of the vote, leaving the Anies-Sandiaga in second place with 39.76 percent and Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono and Sylviana Murni in third place with 17.37 percent.

“We thank PDI-P, the Golkar Party, the NasDem Party, the Hanura Party and the Djan Faridz-led PPP [United Development Party] for endorsing us," said Ahok, who also extended his gratitude to his campaign volunteers.

“Today's result shows that many Jakartans are satisfied with what we’ve done to build Jakarta. But the fight is not over yet. We invite all supporters and volunteers to keep working together to win this,” he added. (ebf)
