he Jakarta corruption court will read out the final verdict on the former speaker of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) on Monday in relation to his alleged role in receiving Rp 100 million (US$7,488) from a businessman while he was in power on Sept.16, 2016.
Irman is the first DPD member to be arrested in a sting operation by the antigraft body for allegedly accepting a bribe from CV Semesta Berjaya director Xaveriandy Sutanto and his wife Memi, who have also been charged with corruption.
Irman has been charged for misusing his power as DPD speaker to influence the State Logistics Agency (Bulog) in determining sugar import quotas in West Sumatra.
KPK prosecutors on Feb.1 demanded a seven-year prison sentence for Irman and asked the panel of judges on the court to fine him Rp 200 million (US$14,975).
If he fails to pay the fine, he should serve an additional five months behind bars, said KPK prosecutors.
KPK prosecutors also asked the panel of judge presiding over Irman’s trial to strip the man of his political rights if found guilty.
Irman’s lawyer Maqdir Ismail called a sentence of seven years behind bars “too heavy”.
Maqdir also lambasted the demand from KPK prosecutors to scrap Irman’s political rights, a move the lawyer said would violate basic human rights. (dmr)
