The government predicts that Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP) will reach US$9.1 trillion by 2045.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said he recently ordered the Finance Ministry to calculate the figure in order to predict the country’s standing over the next two decades, during which Indonesia’s population is expected to reach around 310 million.

“I asked the Finance Minister to calculate what our GDP will be in 2045 because we are not just working for today or next year,” he said during the opening of the Trade Ministry’s 2017 Work Meeting at the State Palace in Jakarta on Tuesday.

However, Jokowi emphasized that the 2045 GDP target could only be achieved if the government worked realistically, based on real calculations from the field.

“I also called for the calculation of income per capita and if we work in the ways I have mentioned, our income per capita may reach $29,000. We must remain optimistic,” he said.

Indonesia’s GDP rose by 5.02 percent last year, compared with 4.88 percent in 2015, according to the Central Statistics Agency.
