he Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) has urged Jakarta’s two gubernatorial candidate pairs, Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and Jakarta Deputy Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat and Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno to refrain from campaigning before the agency declares an official campaign schedule.
Bawaslu head Mimah Susanti said the agency had received public reports saying that each of the two competing teams had held campaign activities even though the Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU) had not yet announced a campaign schedule for the runoff election.
Mimah further said the campaign period for the first round of the election started on Oct. 28 and ended on Feb. 11.
“From Feb. 12 until now, no campaign activities are allowed," she said on Friday.
Any candidate proven guilty of campaigning before the declaration of the official schedule could be charged and sanctioned for election violations, she added. (ebf)
