loodwater has inundated more than 2,000 houses in Riau following heavy rain that drenched a number of regions in the province over the past few days.

Among the affected regions, Rokan Hulu has suffered the most, followed by Kuantan Singingi, Indragiri Hulu, Pelalawan and Kampar regencies, according to the latest data of the Riau Social Affairs Agency.

In Rokan Hulu, water from the overflowing Mentawai River has inundated at least 1,500 houses occupied by approximately 6,000 people in two villages.

Torrential rain caused the Kampar Kiri and Subayang rivers in Kampar to overflew, inundating over 400 houses in nearby villages.

Riau Social Affairs Agency head Syarifuddin AR, however, said the number of affected villages was expected to rise as data collection is ongoing.

“We will comb villages near the affected ones to ensure that aid for victims is distributed evenly,” he said on Sunday. (prm/hwa)
