ahar caused the Jurang Grawah Bridge to collapse on Monday afternoon, cutting off traffic traveling between Boyolali and Magelang in Cepogo district, Boyolali, Central Java.
An 8-meter section of the bridge collapsed.
The bridge is the main road connecting Surakarta, Boyolali and Magelang via Mount Merapi. Torrential rain also caused flooding on the bridge over the Grawah River, which also contributed to the damage.
"It teemed from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning. The river’s current wore away the bridge support until it collapsed," Cepogo village chief Mawardi said on Tuesday.
The Boyolali Police immediately closed the access to the bridge and installed police tape to prevent vehicles and people from using the bridge.
"We have closed the bridge completely, including to pedestrians. We will assign personnel until repairs are done by the Central Java Bina Marga Agency," said Boyolali Traffic Police chief Adj. Comr. Marlin Supu Payu.
Traffic from Boyolali to Magelang has been rerouted to go through Cepogo village and Dukuh Temang in the opposite direction. (rin)
