he selection committee assigned to find a replacement for Constitutional Court (MK) justice Patrialis Akbar, who was named a suspect in a graft case, announced on Friday the names of 12 candidates who had passed the first stage of the selection process.
Committee member Sukma Violetta, who is also the Judicial Commission (KY) deputy chairwoman, confirmed that among the names included on the list of candidates was Saldi Isra, a prominent critic of the MK.
Saldi, a constitutional law professor at Andalas University in Padang, West Sumatra, is a popular name on the list, as is Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) former chief Muhammad Yusuf.
In a discussion held by the court on Thursday, Saldi said MK justices had to ensure their impartiality, in which they should become what he called “asocial people”. They should not make “open contact” with other parties, especially those who have interest in requesting reviews of cases handled by high courts.
Candidates who passed the first screening are scheduled to undergo medical checkups at Gatot Subroto Army General Hospital in Central Jakarta on March 14, followed by interview sessions planned to be open to the public between March 27 and 29.
The selection committee is slated to give its preferred candidate names to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on March 31. (ebf)
