espite the possible involvement of House of Representative Speaker Setya Novanto in a corruption case related to the multi-million dollar procurement of electronic identity cards (e-IDs), the Golkar Party has pledged full support for the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Golkar coordinator for political, legal and security affairs Yorrys Raweyai said the party faced the biggest consequences in terms of being dragged into such cases, especially as the longest-lasting political party in the country. Nevertheless, it would continue to support the government in eradicating corruption.

"We must not tolerate anyone in order to eradicate corruption. Our country upholds the presumption of innocence principle. [The case] is currently in process, and we will be at the forefront of those supporting it," Yorrys told reporters on Friday.

He regretted the fact that many Golkar politicians were named in the KPK indictment, saying that it might implicate the electability of the party in the future. However, Yorrys assured that Golkar as a party would not interfere with or exert pressure on the legal process.

Yorrys went on that any Golkar party politician mentioned in the indictment would appear should they be summoned to testify as witnesses in court, adding that Golkar urged for the hearing to be open to allow the public to follow the progress in the graft case.

The indictment mentioned as many as 37 lawmakers of Commission II, which oversees home affairs, receiving portions of the embezzled funds in return for helping to get the budget approved. (dan)
