ingaporean government protested on Wednesday against Indonesia’s action to hold a vessel and detain passengers and crew within the city-state’s territory.

“Singapore has strongly protested the Indonesian government’s actions,” the Singaporean foreign affairs’ spokesman said in a statement.

Indonesian authorities detained the Seven Seas Conqueress along with its crew and passengers within Singapore waters off Pedra Branca on Aug. 20 last year, according to the Singaporean government.

The spokesman said that nine Singaporean passengers were released on Sept. 1, 2016.  However, Singaporean captain Ricky Tan Poh Hui, and the vessel, remains in Indonesian custody.

“We have emphasized that there is no basis for Indonesia’s detention of the vessel, its crew and passengers, nor for the continued detention of and purported charges brought against Mr. Tan in the Tanjung Pinang District Court,” the Singaporean government asserted.

Indonesian officials were not available for comment on the dispute.  (dan)
