The number of app-based taxis in Greater Jakarta will be limited to three to five per 1,000 residents starting April 1.
Greater Jakarta Transportation Agency (BPTJ) head Elly Adriana Sinaga said ride-hailing drivers had three months to get roadworthiness certificates for their cars and change the classification of their vehicles on their vehicle registration document (STNK).
"We have calculated three to five [online taxis] per 1,000 residents as the proper number," Elly said as quoted by tempo.co on Wednesday. "In future, all online taxis will be distinguished from private vehicles using a special sticker," she added.
Elly said the market for online-based transportation was growing rapidly because the fares were lower than for conventional taxis.
However, Elly said, online taxis had no passenger insurance. "Should anything happen to a passenger, the driver will be held responsible," she said. (dea)
