ncumbent Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama and his rival’s deputy candidate, Sandiaga Uno, attended a peace declaration to ensure the Jakarta gubernatorial runoff election on April 19 runs smoothly.

Ahok’s contender, Anies Baswedan, did not appear at the event that was initiated by the Jakarta Police, because “[Anies] received the invitation only hours before it was to take place.”

“Basuki and I are committed to an honest, fair and democratic election. Hopefully, the upcoming runoff election will leave behind a sweet memory as an occasion that unites people [in the name] of democracy,” said Sandiaga at the declaration venue, the National Monument (Monas) area, in Central Jakarta.

Ahok said in his speech, “We want Jakarta [gubernatorial election] to be secure and free from any foul play. We [Ahok and Sandiaga] have actually been friends all along, but the situation before us makes it appear otherwise.”

The declaration was also attended by Jakarta Police chief Insp. Gen. M. Iriawan, Jakarta Military Command chief Maj. Gen. Jaswandi, Jakarta General Elections Commission (KPU Jakarta) head Sumarno and Jakarta Elections Supervisory Agency (Panwaslu) head Mimah Susanti. (dea)
