Fishermen arrested for blast fishing

The East Nusa Tenggara Police have arrested a fisherman identified as Faisal Mukin from Wato Buku village, East Flores, for blast fishing.

he East Nusa Tenggara Police have arrested a fisherman identified as Faisal Mukin from Wato Buku village, East Flores, for blast fishing. 

The 31-year-old was caught during a routine patrol in Flores waters on Sunday.

Sr. Comr. Budi Santoso, the water police director, said they had also seized a boat, four fish bombs and several Molotov cocktails.

“We also found two cooling boxes and a fishing net,” he said.

Budi said Faisal was currently being detained at a police station in Larantuka.

The fisherman has been charged under Law No.45/2009 with reference to Law No.31/2004 on fisheries, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and Rp 2 billion (US$150,699) in fines.  (wit)
