oordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto has urged all security personnel deployed to safeguard the second round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election to take stern measures against anyone attempting to disrupt the election or intimidate voters, including attempts to mobilize the masses.

Wiranto made the statement during the debriefing of some 20,000 police and military personnel on Tuesday in Ancol, North Jakarta.

National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian and Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo also made speeches on the occasion.

“When we met with President Jokowi, he conveyed a message to citizens and to us as well. [He told us] to respect, guard and protect citizens’ voting rights as a constitutional right so that they will be able to cast their votes as they wish, free from any intimidation or threats from any parties,” said Wiranto.

Gatot said that he, along with Tito, National Intelligence Agency (BIN) director Gen. Budi Gunawan and Vice President Jusuf Kalla had been summoned by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Monday afternoon to receive directives about measures to safeguard the election.

Tito said all of the police offices in Java and Sumatra had released circulars similar to the one released by the Jakarta Police on Monday that prohibited mass mobilization. (dea)
