tate electricity company PLN has secured a Rp 11.2 trillion (US$842.36 million) loan commitment from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to finance the expansion of three power plants. The move is part of a wider effort to fulfill the government’s 35,000-megawatt (MW) electricity program by 2019.

Robert Aprianto Purba, general manager of PLN’s Construction V unit, said the total cost of expanding the power plants is Rp 16 trillion, 70 percent of which will come from JBIC’s loan.  The remaining 30 percent will be sourced from PLN’s internal fund.

PLN’s Construction V unit is responsible for projects in the western part of Java, and is headquartered in Jakarta.

The first project is the fourth unit of a coal-fired power plant (PLTU) in Tangerang, Banten, which has a 315-MW production capacity and is scheduled for operation in September 2019.

The second project is the fourth block of a gas-based facility and coal-based power plants (PLTGU) in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, with an 800-MW production capacity. Operation is expected to commence in mid-2019.

The third project is the third block of a gas-based facility and coal-based power plants (PLTGU) in Muara Karang, West Jakarta, with a 500-MW production capacity, which is expected to start operations in July 2019.

Robert said PLN’s Construction V unit would contribute about 30 percent to the country’s 35,000-MW electricity program.

“We are optimistic that we can achieve our target by the end of 2019.” (dra/bbn)
