ooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Anak Agung Gede Ngurah Puspayoga has issued decrees to close 43,000 inactive cooperatives.
“We closed the cooperatives because they are not active anymore,” the minister said when attending the Malang City Expo (MCE) in Malang, East Java, on Thursday.
The ministry categorizes cooperatives into three groups, according to their performance: inactive cooperatives, unhealthy cooperatives and healthy cooperatives.
From about 150,000 cooperatives, about 75,000 were deemed unhealthy, said the minister.
"Among indications of a healthy cooperative is a growing number of members and holding annual membership meetings,” said Minister Puspayoga.
The government has long tried to develop cooperatives, which are expected to be the backbone of the national economy. (bbn)
