T

he Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto said on Saturday that he would soon summon Indonesian Military (TNI) chief Gen. Gatot Nurmantyo and National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian for different views on treason charges against the government.

“I will gather them to answer your questions,” Wiranto told journalists on Saturday as reported by kompas.com.

In a local TV show on Thursday, Gatot insisted Islamic groups staging protests against lame duck Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama would not use the platform to overthrow the President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration. He said that he was offended by reports that linked the large-scale protests with a planned coup and went on to say that such information was false and made up to scare citizens.

His statements came as a blow to the National Police, which charged several people accused of treason attempts against Jokowi in December 2016 and in March.

The National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Setyo Wasisto refused to comment regarding Gatot’s statements. However, he said the police continued investigations into the treason allegations. (rin)
