total of 532 aircraft will be ready to fly people to their hometowns for Idul Fitri, with the peak of the exodus expected in late June.
The Transportation Ministry has enforced the checking of 250 aircraft since April 15 to guarantee flight safety, the ministry’s air transportation director general, Agus Santoso, told reporters on Sunday.
“The remaining 283 aircraft will undergo compliance-checking from today. It is expected to be completed two weeks before Idul Fitri,” he said.
The 532 aircraft will operate 10 days before and 15 days after Idul Fitri.
The ministry estimates a 9.2 percent increase in air passengers during this year’s exodus to 5.5 million from the 4.9 million recorded last year.
Among hundreds of airports in the country, 35 big airports will mainly cater to domestic passengers and seven airports to international passengers, Agus said.
The seven airports are Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, Halim Pedanakusuma Airport in Jakarta, Juanda Airport in East Java, Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta, Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali, Kualanamu Airport in North Sumatra and Sultan Hasanuddin Airport in South Sulawesi. Agus said the ministry would require every airport to extend its operational hours to anticipate delays and extra flights if ticket sales increased (yon/bbn)
