Indonesia's top scientist group launches books on education, research development

he Indonesian Sciences Academy (AIPI) launched on Friday two books containing its recommendations for the development of research and higher education in the country.
The two books – Buku Putih Sains, Teknologi, dan Pendidikan Tinggi Menuju Indonesia 2045 (The White Book of Science, Technology and Higher Education For Indonesia in 2045) and Era Disrupsi: Peluang dan Tantangan Pendidikan Tinggi Indonesia (The Era of Disruption: Chance and Challenge Awaiting Indonesia’s Higher Education).
The year of 2045 has been seen as an important milestone for Indonesia. In the 100th anniversary of its Independence Day, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) projects, Indonesia will have become the world’s fourth-largest economy.
AIPI chairman Sangkot Marzuki said he hoped the books, written over around two years, could provide “long term” directions for Indonesia, which had struggled for years to improve the quality of its higher education and research environment.
“These recommendations were made upon a request by the research, technology and higher education minister [Muhammad Nasir] nearly two years ago,” Sangkot said during the launch of the books on Friday.
Among the recommendations include the need for Indonesia to increase its budgetary allocations for research and to foster cooperation between higher education institutions and industry players.
The Knowledge Sector Initiative (KSI), cooperation between Bappenas and Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), supported the publishing of the two books. (ebf)
