home to thousands of plant species, the Bogor Botanical Gardens serves as the front yard of Bogor and the lungs of the city. Most importantly, the park is a symbol of diversity for the children of Indonesia.

Commenting on the celebrations for the 200th anniversary of the Bogor Botanical Gardens, Bogor Mayor Bima Arya said he could not imagine what life for Bogor’s residents would be like without the presence of the urban forest.

The mayor said ethnic and religious backgrounds did not matter once people entered the urban sanctuary. “Here, we can together enjoy the beauty of rare plants from across Indonesia.”

Around 1,000-2,000 people visit the Bogor Botanical Gardens during the weekdays. This number increases to 10,000 on the weekends.

To attract more visitors, he said, the Bogor administration tries to efficiently manage public facilities around the park and the Bogor Presidential Palace.

“We try to manage traffic around the two places by applying a one-way system to solve congestion and reduce heavy traffic in the area,” the mayor said.

It is also hoped that walkways built around the Bogor Botanical Gardens and the Bogor Palace will minimize risks for pedestrians. (ebf)
