ice President Jusuf Kalla and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed the acceleration of the development of the Jakarta-Surabaya medium speed railway project when they met in Tokyo on Monday.

They met after attending the 23rd International Forum: Future of Asia in Tokyo.

The tender process for the project that will be implemented after a feasibility study is completed by the end of 2017, was a focus of discussions between the two leaders, said Kalla.

"The most important thing now is how to accelerate the development of the project. Japan remains committed," he remarked as reported by Antara.

He believed there would be no significant problems developing the project because Indonesia already had the basic infrastructure, such as railways, stations and human resources.

The Jakarta-Surabaya medium-speed railway project is set to reduce travel time from about nine hours to only five hours.

Indonesia and Japan will hold another meeting in Jakarta in September to discuss the results of the feasibility study.

During their 30-minute bilateral meeting, Kalla and Abe also discussed other issues, including investment in the other infrastructure projects and the manufacturing sector as well as efforts to increase the number of Indonesian people working in Japan and boosting cooperation to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations between the countries.(bbn)
