ast Jakarta Social Agency arrested on Wednesday a 75-year-old beggar named Jasir who was carrying nearly Rp 4 million (US$300.57) he earned beneath a pedestrian bridge in Tegalan, Matraman in East Jakarta municipality.

“He plans to give the money to his children and grandchildren in Padang, West Sumatra,” agency head Benny Martha said.

Benny said the man, who had been a beggar in Jakarta for a year, appeared to not have bathed in a long time.

Benny added that it was difficult to communicate with Jasir because of a difference in dialect.

“We have taken him into Bina Insan Bangun Daya 2 temporary shelter in Cipayung, East Jakarta. He will receive social services,” Benny said. (fac)
