The General Elections Commission (KPU) began preparations for the third simultaneous regional elections with a ceremony at its headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday.

Several representatives from government ministries and institutions as well as the police and military and political parties attended the ceremony at the KPU headquarters.

“[The election] is divided into two parts, namely preparations and implementation. We started preparations today, while the implementation will start in September,” KPU chairman Arief Budiman said in his speech.

He added that the implementation stages included dissemination, recruitment of field officers, updating the data on voters and processing the candidacies.

On June 27 next year, 171 regions will participate in simultaneous regional elections. — JP/yon
