tate-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I expects to see 7.15 million passengers flying in and out of its 13 airports in central and eastern Indonesia during this year’s mudik (homecoming journey) season between June 15 and July 11.

The estimated number of passengers is 14.29 percent higher than last year’s figure for the 13 cities and regencies, including Surabaya in East Java; Makassar in South Sulawesi; Balikpapan in East Kalimantan; Manado in North Sulawesi; Semarang and Solo in Central Java; Yogyakarta City in Yogyakarta; Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara; and Denpasar in Bali.

Angkasa Pura I president director Danang S Baskoro said the firm had prepared for the increased traffic by rearranging airport interiors to allow swifter crowd movement and setting up posts staffed by Indonesian military, police and airport personnel to assist passengers.

“We’ll also be available through a contact center 172 and we’ve told airlines to provide their passengers with the mobile number of a relevant official in case of any delays,” he said on Monday evening.

AP 1 has forecast that total traffic during the Idul Fitri holiday will be 53,262 airplanes, a year-on-year increase of 11.49 percent while extra flights will reach 1,732 or equal to 309,803 seats. Solo, Surabaya, Yogyakarta and Semarang are destinations that are projected to see the highest increases. (ags)
