Prosecutors in e-ID case demand former Home Ministry officials be jailed

orruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors have demanded that the Jakarta Corruption Court’s judge panel sentence two former Home Ministry officials to prison over their alleged involvement in the e-ID graft case.
The prosecutors sought seven years in prison for Irman, the former director general for population and civil registration at the ministry, and Rp 500 million (US$37,540) in fines or an additional six months in prison.
Meanwhile, the prosecutors demanded five years’ imprisonment for Sugiharto, the former population administration information management director at the ministry’s Directorate General for Population and Civil Registration. They also sought Rp 400 million in fines, or an additional six months in prison, from the official.
“The two defendants have been proven guilty of the graft accusations,” the head of the team of KPK prosecutors, Irene Putrie, said.
The two men were named suspects for their alleged involvement in corruption surrounding the Rp 5.9 trillion e-ID project, which caused Rp 2.3 trillion in state losses. Businessman Andi Agustinus, alias Andi Narogong, was also named a suspect in the case.
The prosecutors also demanded that the judge panel order the two defendants to pay back the money they allegedly embezzled to the state.
They demanded that Irman return $273,700, Rp 2.4 billion and S$6,000, or face an additional two years in prison. Their demand for Sugiharto was that he return Rp 500 million in funds or receive an additional one year in prison.
The two defendants are scheduled to read out their defense statements on July 10. (yon/ebf)
