oll road operator Jasa Marga has called on Jakartans to cut their Idul Fitri holiday short if they want to avoid being trapped in inbound traffic, which is expected to peak this upcoming weekend.

Jasa Marga has predicted that the numbers of vehicles entering the capital will increase by 40.6 percent to 110,000 units, from 78,000 units on regular days.

Inbound traffic is expected to start on Friday.

“We suggest road users to actively participate in making a comfortable and safe return by coming back [to Jakarta] in the middle of the week instead of on the weekend,” Jasa Marga assistant vice president of corporate communication, Dwimawan Heru, said in a statement issued on Monday.

Jasa Marga has prepared two solutions to anticipate the high number of vehicles returning to the capital. First, it will increase the number of toll gates at Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java to 30 from the normal 24.

Second, the operator will enforce closed-open traffic lanes from and to rest areas.

“We will also provide parking bays at the 58-and 34-kilometer points to Jakarta to anticipate crowding at rest areas,” Dwimawan said.

The company is also offering 20 percent discounts on Friday and Sunday next week. (dra/ika)
