t least 83 Indonesians are on the police’s most-wanted list for their alleged involvement with the Islamic State (IS) movement, an official said on Wednesday.
The immigration director general at the Law and Human Rights Ministry, Ronny F. Sompie, said his office had received the list from the National Police. It included 243 people in total who had alleged connections with terrorist groups.
Of the total, 91 are allegedly affiliated with IS; 83 of those are Indonesian and the remaining 143 are suspected of being involved in other terrorist groups.
"The IS-affiliated are specifically those who are in the Middle East and are considered foreign terrorist fighters," Ronny said on Wednesday.
Ronny added that the five countries that topped the list are Algeria with 19, Indonesia with 18, Egypt with 10, Pakistan with 10 and Iraq with six.
The Directorate General of Immigration claimed that it prevented 301 alleged foreign militants, mainly 127 from Afghanistan and 40 from the Philippines, from entering Indonesia between January and June this year. It said it also rejected passport applications from a number of people who were believed to be planning to join terrorist groups abroad. (ecn/ika)
