A

potential replacement for the bemo (three-wheeled vehicles used for public transportation) is set for trialed across Jakarta this month.

Currently, there are 17 new mini four-wheeled vehicles, called bajaj qute, serving a route from the Jakarta Kota railway station in West Jakarta to SMAN 40 state school in Pademangan, North Jakarta. The rate for each trip is Rp 5,000 (50 US cents).

The vehicle, which was launched in 2012, was imported from one of India’s largest automotive companies, Bajaj Auto.

“I have been driving this [bajaj qute] for twelve days now. I like it, because every time I drive, this beautiful thing becomes the center of attention,” driver Rohim, 45, said on Tuesday.

However, Rohim, who had been a bemo driver since 1985, said he had to work twice as earn money with the bajaj qute because it could not carry as many passengers as the bemo.

Bajaj qute's size is smaller than the bemo with a capacity of five people including the driver.  “A bemo could carry seven people per trip, but now I can only take four,” he said.

The Jakarta administration officially banned the bemo from operating in the city on June 6, after a year phasing out the old vehicles, which were environmentally unfriendly. (hol)
