The only Indonesian pair to reach the Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2017 finals for the individual’s event, Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto and Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti, came out as champions of the Under-19 mixed doubles tournament on Sunday.
Rehan and Fadia’s gold-medal achievement gave Indonesia, this year’s host country, at least one thing to celebrate. The pair, fifth seed here, outclassed third-seed pair Sung Seung-na and Ah Yeong-seong of South Korea 21-19, 19-21, 21-9.
“We’re extremely happy with the final result. Initially, we targeted to reach the semifinals, but it turned out better,” said Rehan after the match, which was held at Jaya Raya Sports Hall Training Center in Jakarta.
Fadia said she was relieved to eventually beat a South Korean following Indonesia’s loss in last week’s junior championships. In the event, Indonesia lost 3-2 to South Korea.
“We should not be too proud of what we’ve earned today. There are a number of competitions ahead. This is just the beginning,” Fadia said.
Thanks to the winning pair, Indonesia can celebrate securing a gold medal in the junior championships after the last one it earned in 2012, won by Edi Subaktiar and Arya Maulana in the men’s doubles category.
In other events, China’s Zijian Di and Wang Chang clinched the U19 men’s doubles, China’s Han Yue won the U19 women’s singles, South Korea’s Baek Ha-na and Lee Yu-rim won the U19 women’s doubles, while Malaysia’s Jun Hao Leong secured the U19 men’s singles.
