head of the 72nd anniversary of Indonesia’s Independence Day, Pekojan residents have produced and hung up a 500-meter red and white piece of cloth along Jl. Bandengan Utara until Jl. Gedong Panjang in West Jakarta.
The red-and-white banner of the Indonesian flag, claimed to be the longest in the world, was sewed by 720 female residents of Pekojan and put up near the neighborhood’s icon, the Pekojan Monument, on Friday.
Pekojan subdistrict head Tri Prasetyo said the action was to heed Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat’s call to hang up decorative flags on every road of the neighborhood for Independence Day.
“We have chosen a different way [to follow the call] by creating the world’s longest red-and-white flag,” Tri said, adding that the 720 women had sewn the national flag to express their love for Indonesia.
He said in addition to putting up the flag, the subdistrict would also organize competitions in sports, art and cooking as well as in cleanliness and greenery and decorate neighborhood gates.
“Various competitions will be held from Aug. 7 until Aug. 17,” Tri said, as quoted by wartakota.tribunnews.com. (dra)
