resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo held a meeting on Thursday with a number of popular figures on social media during which he urged them to step up the fight against hoaxes and fake news.
Some of the social media influencers included journalist Ulin Yusron, social media activists Chico Hakim and Nita Kartika Sari as well as popular YouTube star Arief Muhammad.
Presidential spokesman Johan Budi SP said that during the meeting, which was followed by lunch, Jokowi urged the social media influencers to properly use the medium.
"Jokowi calls on users of social media to promote the country's unity," Johan said.
YouTube star Arief said that in the meeting Jokowi urged social media influencers to counter hoaxes and fake news.
"The point is that we should join our efforts to fight hoaxes. By engaging in positive behaviors online, we can quash negative contents," Arief said as quoted by kompas.com.
The President has repeatedly expressed in recent months his concerns over the growing intensity of disinformation on social media.
Jokowi has ordered an investigation into the fake news and ordered the prosecution of individuals responsible for spreading online rumors.
