T Krakatau Semen Indonesia (KSI), a joint venture between state-owned steel maker PT Krakatau Steel and state-owned cement maker PT Semen Indonesia, has launched its slag grinding plant.

The grinding plant has a production capacity of 690,000 tons of ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) per year, to produce an environmentally friendly cement material.

“GGBFS is a more stable product that can substitute for cements widely used in concrete structures for ports, bridges, roads and buildings,” Krakatau Steel president director Mas Wigrantoro Roes Setiyadi said at the inauguration of the plant on Thursday.

The slag grinding plant, located in Cilegon, Banten, stands on a four-hectare area and required a total investment of Rp 420 billion to build. The construction of the slag powder plant begun in early 2014.

Krakatau Steel and Semen Indonesia each owns a 50 percent stake in the joint venture, in which 30 percent of the investment came from the two companies and 70 percent was financed by bank loans. (dis/ags)
