water tanker truck and patrol vehicle reportedly belonging to mining giant PT Freeport Indonesia were shot by unknown assailants while traveling to Mile 61 in the mining area on Sunday.

The backs of the tanker truck and the patrol car, driven by Rilen Deda and Bery Rawung, respectively, were hit, leaving several holes.

“As the vehicles headed to Mile 61, gun shots were suddenly heard from both the left and right sides of the road,” Papua Police spokesman Sr. Comr. AM. Kamal said. “No casualties have been reported from the incident.”

However, Mobile Brigade (Brimob) personnel seconded from the Riau Police, Bharada R. Arga, reportedly sustained a minor injury due to shards of a broken window.

Mimika Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Victor D. Mackbon said investigators were deployed to the scene and questioned witnesses.

Shootings by unknown assailants near Freeport’s mining area have occurred in the past. In August, an unidentified person shot a car owned by a miner. Papua Police chief Insp. Gen. Boy Rafli Amar said the police had identified the alleged perpetrator.
