The government says progress in the implementation of unmanned toll gates has reached 72 percent
he government says progress in the implementation of unmanned toll gates has reached 72 percent. It plans to fully implement the cashless payment system at toll roads by the end of October.
Coordinating Economic Minister Darmin Nasution said following what the government deemed a success, the next goal would be to provide cashless services for toll roads under construction.
"We are checking [the progress of cashless toll roads] today and have concluded that full implementation will be achieved by the end of the month," Darmin told reporters on Friday.
Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo welcomed the results, saying that banks partnering with the government in the program would do their best to provide the cards needed for the cashless payment.
"Latest reports show that 1.5 million cards have been distributed," said Agus. "We predict his program will require at least 3 million cards."
Nevertheless, Agus said the cashless toll roads was just a transitional measure until the implementation of a multi-lane free flow (MLFF), which would allow users to travel through toll roads without having to stop at tollgates to pay.
"Before we reach the MLFF phase, we must first proceed with accustoming toll road users to using the cashless payment method," he said, adding that the government would further intensify efforts to promote the cashless program.
