Cyber security issues still a challenge: BlackBerry

B

lackBerry Limited announced its findings on a survey to 200 IT decision-makers directly or indirectly responsible for endpoint decisions in their organizations that the Internet of Things (IoT) has huge opportunities despite challenges in cyber security issues.

“The proliferation of IoT is being led by enterprises, and they continue to require a unified endpoint management strategy that is capable of scaling to handle billions of connected devices,” said Marty Beard, BlackBerry Chief Operating Officer, in a press release.

“We are focused on securing the EoT [Enterprise of Things] because for all its promise, the expanding adoption of connected things means that companies are only as secure as their most vulnerable endpoint.”

Conducted by 451 Research, the whitepaper titled, “Securing the Enterprise of Things: Opportunity for securing IoT with a unified platform emerging as IoT popularity grows” revealed that 63 percent of its respondents said security was the “top” concern regarding digital technologies and processes.

However, only 37 percent actually have a formal digital transformation strategy in place.

Organizations are least prepared against external threats, the findings say, with 61 percent citing hackers and cyberwarfare as top concerns. According to the findings, security has been and will continue to be the first concern for organizations when considering IoT investments.

The survey took place in June and July 2017 and the respondents came from the US, the UK, Australia, Canada, France, Netherlands, Singapore, Norway, China and Austria. The respondents also represented a wide range of vertical industries, including financial services, government and healthcare.

BlackBerry will hold the annual security summit in London on Oct. 24 and 25 and the next event will be in New York on Nov. 14 and 15. The summit will be attended by enterprise leaders and will address today’s situation and trends in secure enterprise mobility.

BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen is slated to reveal the company’s updates on its vision and strategic direction.

According to Bloomberg report, Blackberry had licensed its specialized version of Alphabet Inc.’s Android software to Chinese contract manufacturer Yangzhou New Telecom Science & Technology Co, known as NTD.

Four carriers from Asia, Africa and Latin America, which BlackBerry declined to name, have already signed up to buy NTD devices with the BlackBerry software.

BlackBerry stopped making its own phones last year and began licensing its technology and brand to other companies. Up to this point, those deals have included BlackBerry’s hardware patents, some of which go back to the nascent days of the smartphone era.

The deal shows there is demand for the company’s version of the Android software on its own, said Alex Thurber, head of mobility solutions division for the Waterloo, Ontario-based company.
