Nauru President Baron Divavesi Waqa met President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at Bogor Palace in West Java on Friday.

The two leaders talked about maritime cooperation. “After the meeting, they agreed to cooperate on the development of maritime and marine resources,” Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi said after accompanying Jokowi at the meeting.

She added that the scope of cooperation included the exchange of information about illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing and finding ways to solve the problem.

Retno said talks on the issue would continue when Indonesian representatives visit Nauru in January to attend the commemoration of the island nation’s 50th the Independent Day.

“The President of Nauru has invited our president to the event, but President Jokowi has assigned Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto to attend the event. During the visit, Wiranto will come with an economic team to follow up the issue,” she said.

Nauru has long criticized Indonesia over the human rights situation in Papua and West Papua provinces.
