MW Indonesia, along with PT Tunas Mobilindo Parama, opened its first dealership for electric vehicles in Jakarta, which will also provide service and maintenance for BMW’s line of electric and plug-in hybrids.

It is equipped with technicians qualified to handle the electric motors.

“BMW Indonesia is very positive on the launching of the BMW i series in 2016, and we are confident about its popularity over petrol and diesel models in the coming years,” said Jodie O’tania, vice president of corporate communications of BMW Group Indonesia.

About the future of electric vehicles in Indonesia, she said, it would depend on the commitments of all stakeholders.

“When we talk about infrastructure, it is not limited to BMW’s commitment, but also the commitment of the government and state-owned electricity firm PLN to provide the charging points for the vehicles,” Jodie said during a press conference on Tuesday.

Jodie said BMW supported the government in developing electric cars through a transfer of technology and providing the experts.

Meanwhile, Tunas Mobilindo Parama BMW chief operating officer Purwoko Arbutomo said in a statement that his firm had invested Rp 3 billion (US$220,800) to develop the facility, mainly to build facilities and training for technicians to handle electric vehicles.

The statement said that BMW Indonesia would introduce more than 10 new models in the following year, including an undisclosed electric model. (jlm/bbn)
