Some 1,475 people across Jakarta were caught in a one week street crime operation by the Jakarta Police.

Police general crimes director head Sr. Comr. Nico Afinta said on Thursday that in the operation, held between Dec. 7-13, the police successfully handled 543 cases of street crime.

“There were various cases of street crime including pick-pocketing, motorcycle robbery, illegal parking, murder, brawling and even sexual harassment in public places. Pick-pocketing of smartphones was the most common crime,” said Nico.

“We also found incidents of pick-pocketing in crowded places that are supposed to be safe, such as car free days,” he added, referring to the car free day event held every Sunday along the city’s business district of Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman.

Out of the total number of people caught in the operation, 225 were subjected to further investigation. Meanwhile, others were left under police supervision.

The police also confiscated criminal evidence such as Rp 350 million (US$ 24,536) in bank notes, four guns, 40 combat knives, 73 smartphones and 13 R4 rifles.

The Jakarta Police will continue their street crime operation until Dec. 22. It will be followed by the Lilin Jaya operation between Dec. 23 to Jan. 1, 2018, which is aimed at securing Christmas and New Year celebrations. (roi)
