he Trade Ministry and National Police have signed an agreement on law enforcement, supervision and security in the trade sector with the main objective of protecting consumers.
“Law enforcement provides legal certainty for business people and protects the interests of consumers,” said Trade Minister Enggartiasto Lukita in a written speech read by Trade Ministry secretary general Karyanto Suprih during the signing of the agreement in Jakarta on Tuesday.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Trade Ministry consumer protection and business order director general Syahrul Mamma and National Police criminal investigation department (Bareskrim) chief Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto.
The MOU is an extension of an agreement signed between the two institutions on Jan. 4, 2013 that is set to expire on Jan. 4, 2018.
The cooperation agreement covers exchange of data and information, law enforcement, supervision, security and human resources development.
Meanwhile, Syahrul said as a follow-up to the MOU, both parties had also signed another cooperation document to further elaborate on the duties of each party.
“What we need are concrete supervision activities so that the results [of our work] can be felt by both businesspeople and consumers,” Syahrul added. (bbn)
