he former head of the Bekasi Police's traffic unit was found to have amassed Rp 61 million (US$ 4,270) in illegal fees, the Jakarta Police said on Thursday.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Argo Yuwono said former Bekasi traffic police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. I Nengah Adi Putra had reportedly collected the money from people who bribed traffic officers to obtain a driver's license without formal testing.
"The suspect also renewed expired licenses by manipulating the non-tax state revenue [PNBP] fee," Argo said, as quoted by kompas.com, adding that the amount of the "fee" varied from person to person.
He said the police’s internal affairs division (Paminal) had confiscated the illicitly gained money and would place Nengah under disciplinary sanctions, adding that internal affairs were investigating the case.
Nengah, who has been dismissed from his position, was caught red-handed in the act of collecting illegal fees on Feb. 10 by internal affairs officers. (cal)
