ozens of laid-off employees of the closed 7-Eleven convenience store franchise held a demonstration in front of the KAWAI office in Kebayoran Lama, South Jakarta, on Wednesday morning, to demand payment of their severance pay.
According to demonstrators, PT Modern Internasional, as the parent company of PT Modern Sevel Indonesia, failed to pay the former employees after closing all 7-Eleven stores in June last year.
Sumarsono, head of PT Modern Putra Indonesia Workers’ Union, said the workers had not received their severance pay in the eight months that has followed the closing of the stores.
“The total amount owed to union members is Rp 17.5 billion [US$1,28 million], while the total for non-union members is approximately Rp 20 billion,” said Sumarsono as quoted by kompas.com.
According to Sumarsono, Modern Internasional should have paid the former employees before Dec. 31 last year. The company had paid the workers’ salary and Idul Fitri holiday allowance (THR).
Modern Internasional decided to close down all 7-Eleven outlets in Jakarta on Jun. 30 last year, as PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia choose not to proceed with the acquisition of the convenience store business after both sides failed to reach an agreement. (jlm)
