Heru, a former law enforcement deputy at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), replaces Comr. Gen. Budi Waseso, who will retire in March.
Heru was one of three candidates that National Police chief Gen. Tito Karnavian submitted for the President's consideration.
In addition to Heru, the two other possible replacements were Budi’s deputy, Insp. Gen Arman Depari, and current National Police Criminal Investigation (Bareskrim) head Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sumanto.
Budi was inaugurated in September 2015 by then-National Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti. (ebf)
