Bekasi, West Java, resident, Hendrik, told the police that his 16-year-old daughter, identified only as W, is an alleged human trafficking victim.

“I reported it to the police this morning,” said the 55-year-old in Teluk Buyung village, North Bekasi, as quoted by tempo.co on Monday.

Hendrik explained that W had not been seen since February after asking him permission to work. The junior high school graduate told him that school fees were costly. “I didn’t allow her to work because she must continue her studies,” he said.

After running away, W informed her parents that she was employed as a domestic worker in Pekanbaru, Riau. But a family acquaintance, Wit, told them that W was allegedly working at a karaoke parlor in Nabire, Papua, which he had recently visited.

Hendrik believed that W was allegedly offered the job by a woman with the initials IDR. W was promised an “easy yet highly paid job” in Papua. IDR allegedly took W to the airport, and then she coordinated with someone in Papua to pick her up.

Instead of receiving a huge salary, W was allegedly told to pay off a debt of Rp 11 million (US$790) that she cannot afford. “She cannot come back home until she has paid off the debt,” said Hendrik.

Bekasi Police spokesperson Comr. Erna Ruswing Andari confirmed that Hendrik had made a report about his daughter being an alleged victim of human trafficking. (vny)
