A

t least 35 students of SMA 8 state senior high school in Mataram, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), had to do their final examination in the schoolyard on Friday

SMA 8 deputy headmaster Syamsuddin said the students were being punished for violating the school’s rules on the uniform that they should have worn that day.

“We forced them to take their exams outside of the classroom to discipline them. They should have worn an imtaq [Islamic-themed] uniform on Friday but they didn’t,” he said as quoted by kompas.com on Saturday.

Pictures have gone viral showing the students sat on the ground doing their tests on paper without a table, causing the NTB Child Protection Agency (LPA) to take action.

“It is important to discipline the pupils. However, the school is supposed to do so without neglecting the students’ right, which in this case is their right to feel safe and comfortable at school, especially during an examination,” said an LPA NTB advocacy team member.

The Mataram Ombudsman will reportedly summon the SMA 8 headmaster to further investigate the case. (vla)
