700 free 'mudik' buses to depart from Bekasi on June 9 People get ready to board buses that will take them back to their hometowns for Idul Fitri in July 2015. The bus rides were offered for free by state-owned insurance company PT Jasa Raharja. ( tempo.co/Aditia Noviansyah.)

At least 700 free mudik (exodus) buses will depart from Bekasi, West Java, on June 9.

The Bekasi Transportation Agency has instructed the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road operator to prepare for the buses headed in that direction.

“All buses will simultaneously hit the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road on Saturday [June 9]. Can you imagine how crowded it will be? ” said the agency’s fleet division head, Fathikun, on Monday as quoted by antaranews.com.

Of the 700 buses, more than 500 have been provided by the Transportation Ministry, 110 by the West Java Transportation Agency and 25 by the Workers Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan).

The remaining buses are provided by private companies.

The Bekasi Transportation Agency, Fathikun said, decided to dispatch the buses on Saturday to avoid traffic congestion the following week.

“The toll road will get even busier a few days before Idul Fitri [expected to fall on June 15],” Fathikun said.

PT Jasa Marga Tol Jakarta-Cikampek spokesman Irwansyah, meanwhile, said the company was ready to accommodate the mudik.

“We’re predicting that the roads won’t be too congested that day,” he said, noting that some infrastructure projects on the toll road might be halted by June 9.(vla)
