ubbed Indonesia’s first environmentally friendly airport, the expanded Ahmad Yani International Airport in Tambakharjo, Semarang, Central Java, will be ready to operate on June 6.

Construction of new facilities for the airport began in June 2017. The new facilities will replace old ones located in the southern part of the area.

The revamped airport will be wider than before and have a higher capacity to accommodate both more passengers and more aircraft. The runway has also been extended.

State-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura (AP) I president director Faik Fahmi said the inaugural flight at the revamped airport would be held on June 6. “We will move from the old terminal on June 5,” he told journalists on Tuesday evening.

Faik said construction activities for the new airport, which was built with a total Rp 2.2 trillion (US$157.26 million) in investment, were 95 percent complete. “The inaugural operation of the airport will also mark the start of the homebound travel season for Idul Fitri this year,” he said.

According to AP I data, the new terminal covers 58,652 square meters, roughly nine times more than the existing terminal. The runway’s length has been extended to 3,000 meters from 2,560 m.

The apron at the new terminal measures 61,334 sq m and is connected to a 72,552 sq m taxiway, which can accommodate 13 narrow body aircraft or a combination of 10 narrow body aircraft and two wide body cargo aircraft.

Faik said it was hoped that, once construction activities were fully completed in 2019, the new terminal could accommodate 19,000 passengers a day or 7 million per year, up from the current capacity of 810,000 per year. (ebf)
