A

driver died on the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road in the early hours of Tuesday after somebody threw rocks from a nearby footbridge that hit passing cars.

State-owned toll operator PT Jasa Marga spokesperson Irwansyah confirmed the incident, saying the case was being handled by the police.

Irwansyah said the company conducted regular security checks on footbridges. “But this kind of incident is unpredictable,” he said as quoted by otomotif.kompas.com on Friday.

An Instagram user with the handle @mas.permadio uploaded a story recounting the moments when an unknown party threw rocks at his car and another car on the toll road.

"I was driving in the fast lane when a rock suddenly hit my windshield," he wrote. "Since I was speeding, the rock came through like a bullet, broke the windshield and heavily damaged the roof of the car."

He went on to write that he managed to pull over and seek help from a passing tow truck. There were two big rocks in the middle of his windshield.

It was then that he saw another car gradually come to a halt. Suspecting the worst, he and the tow truck driver approached the car.

"I heard a female voice from inside the car crying out for help. And then I saw driver was covered in blood," he said.

A rock had come through the windshield and hit the driver in the neck, jaw and upper chest, killing him.

Toll road operator Jasa Marga operation management division vice president Bagus Cahya AB stated that a person with a psychological disorder was the perpetrator.

“The perpetrator has been arrested,” he said. (rfa)
