Local authorities have closed all trails to the peak of Mount Lawu on the border of Central Java and East Java after a forest fire.
A forest fire started to engulf Dumiling forest in Central Java’s part of Mount Lawu in Karanganyar on Tuesday.
“We decided to close the hiking routes until we have complete control of the situation,” Bambang Djatmiko, head of Karanganyar Disaster Mitigation Agency in Central Java, said on Wednesday.
Earlier, the search and rescue team and volunteers rescued dozens of climbers from the mountain.
As of Wednesday afternoon, authorities have successfully put out fires in most parts of Dumiling forest.
“We are now focusing on preventing fires from spreading to nearby residential areas,” Bambang said.
In 2015, at least seven climbers were found dead after being trapped in a forest fire on the slopes of Mount Lawu.
