orth Sumatra is the province with the largest number of civil servants convicted of corruption, according to the National Civil Service Agency (BKN).
The BKN reached the conclusion after examining data from the Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Corrections Directorate General.
Data from the BKN shows that 298 North Sumatra civil servants were convicted of corruption. Eleven percent work for the provincial administration, while the rest work at the regency or city level.
West Java came second, with 193 civil servants implicated in corruption cases, followed by Riau, East Nusa Tenggara and Papua, with 190, 183 and 146 officials convicted of graft respectively.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta and West Sulawesi are recorded as the regions with the least number of civil servants implicated in graft cases, with only three people in both provinces.
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is calling on regional leaders to get tough on civil servants involved in graft.
“According to the Interior Ministry’s newest regulation, civil servants that have been sentenced for corruption have to be dishonorably dismissed from their position,” KPK spokesperson Febri Diansyah said, as quoted by kompas.com.
The Interior Ministry issued a circular letter on Monday saying regional leaders should dishonorably dismiss civil servants that are proven to be corrupt and have been convicted by a court.
On Thursday, Interior Minister Tjahjo Kumolo, Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform Minister Syafruddin and BKN chief Bima Haria Wibisana signed a joint decree on dismissing 2,357 corrupt civil servants who had yet to be dismissed by their respective regional leaders.
BKN spokesperson Mohammad Ridwan told The Jakarta Post recently that the government spent an estimated Rp 23.57 billion (US$1.6 million) per month on convicted civil servants’ salaries. (ris/ahw)
