An earthquake that left at least one person dead was felt in the areas of Donggala, Palu and Poso of Central Sulawesi.
6.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Donggala regency in Central Sulawesi on Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. local time, killing one person and injuring at least 10 others. They were hit by collapsing buildings.
National and Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said on Friday that the quake struck about 2 kilometers north of Donggala at a depth of 10 km and lasted 10 seconds.
The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks of magnitudes between 3.2 and 5.
The main quake was felt in the areas of Donggala, Palu and Poso.
“There is no tsunami risk,” Sutopo said.
He added that the earthquake had been caused by the Palu Karo thrust, which stretched from Palu to Teluk Bone.
“Officials are currently carrying out evacuation and emergency measures and collecting data,” Sutopo said. (evi)
